SUHT Breast Unit Protocols

Protocols for the investigation and management of breast cancer in the Southampton Breast Unit

The care of large numbers of patients in a busy specialist breast centre treating many thousands of outpatients and some 500 breast cancer patients requires careful organisation and a systematic approach to provide a safe and efficient service and to minimise the risk of diagnostic errors.

To this end, all investigation and treatment programmes are based upon planned and agreed protocols. These in turn draw upon published national and international best practice guidelines, tempered by local experience.

These management protocols are provided for all surgical consultants and attached surgical trainees to use. They are available on request from the departmental secretaries, and it is expected that they will be read by all trainees before or during the early phase of their attachment to the Unit.
